Leslie asks us to think about our entire student teaching experience

1. What is the most important teaching advice that was given to you by your cooperating teacher?   Has that advice been helpful to you during the past few weeks?

2. What has been your most exciting student teaching experience, to date.

  1. I am going to talk about my cooperating teacher I had two semesters ago who I felt was the best teacher I have observed. She gave me amazing advice. One piece of advice that she gave was to always let them be independent. Instead of her being the "mom" of the classroom and doing everything for the students, let them do it themselves. It not only helps them in the classroom, but in their life as well. For example, instead of the teacher standing at the door and greeting the students in the morning she had one student stand at the door and greet the whole class. Instead of the teacher handing out paper, she had a "paper passer" who passed out the papers. She taught them to be very independent and I can see such a huge difference from the 2nd grade students in her class verses the 2nd grade students who are in my class this semester.
My most exciting student teaching experience to date was with the same teacher. She bought me a book called "A Christmas Cookie Exchange". She allowed me to create a lesson off of it. This was a class that did not require me to teach a lesson, but she wanted me to feel comfortable and get the experience. She allowed me to take control of it. I read the book and created two worksheets: one was a letter to the main character, and one allowed the students to create their own one of a kind cookie. While I was teaching, she took pictures of me and sent them to me afterwards. Once I was done with the lesson she had all of her students sit on the carpet and give me advice on how to be a great teacher and things I should include in my classroom. It was a great experience and I was very lucky to observe her. I enjoy my class this semester, but it is very different because their is not much physical interaction going on between me and the students or the teacher and the students so I cannot say this semester has been my favorite.

  2. I am going to talk about my cooperating teacher that I have currently. Despite only being with her a handful of times, she right off the bat gave me some influential advice. Specifically, she explained to me how it is VERY important to be able to adapt to the given environment of your students as they are going to becoming into your classroom with all different cultures and backgrounds. It becomes a major focus throughout the school year to make sure that you hit all of your objectives and from there make the classroom. Advice is something I have always embraced and especially within my profession in which I want to take pride in everything that is told to me and very soon I will be applying my actions by starting to teach lessons prior to my observations from our university. I plan to maintain my focus and use all of my resources to my advantage to ensure a fair transition as the school year progresses.
