Dr. Ries and a social studies question

1. Now that you are in the final weeks of this ED449e course, what have you decided is the importance of social studies in the elementary curriculum?  What, exactly, do you think students learn from being exposed to a social studies curriculum at the elementary level?  Should we think of eliminating social studies at the K-3 level and start in Grade 4?

2.   What are three things that you learned from having taken this course?    What did you learn that you had not known before?

  1. 1. Now that I am in the final weeks of this class, I have realized the Social Studies is an important part of the curriculum. I always thought Social Studies meant watching a video and answering questions, but I have realized it can be much more than that. Before this class I never enjoyed learning or had an interest in Social Studies. Now I realize that Social Studies is an important part of us as individuals. It allows students to understand, participate and make decisions about their world. It provides students with the skills to problem solving and decision making in their life. It allows them to be a better person all around and will allow them to be a better individual for the future. I think Social Studies should be taught at the young grade of kindergarten, or at least incorporated in somehow. It is important for students to have an basic understanding of this subject at a young age. It will set them up for success in the future.

    2. Three things I have learned from taking this course: How to properly write a planning commentary, how to be more specific when writing my lesson plans, and how to be more confident when it comes to teaching Social Studies to my class.

  2. 1. As we approach the final weeks in class, I have noticed the importance of social studies in the elementary curriculum is teaching or informing students how to become greater citizens in their community. Social studies should not be eliminated because it is necessary for children to learn how to treat others, their parts in their community, and other people duty in their community. These are key elements that can be taught at an early age.
    2. I learned more in depth material about lesson planning, how to be specific when writing my commentary about my lesson plan and I learned tips from my classmates about their experience in the classroom. Something I learned that I had not known before is the commentary, I had no idea what that was. But with practice and a lot of editing I understand it.

  3. 1. It feels unreal how I am in the final weeks of this class and from everything that we have talked about, the subject of Social Studies is an VERY important part of the curriculum. It really gives the students an opportunity to think outside the box while also applying their knowledge in other subjects within Social Studies are there are constant moving parts that are occurring as the school year is happening.

Social Studies is an important aspect to have as individuals as it allows students to understand, participate and make decisions about their world and also provides them with the skills to problem solving and decision making in their life. It allows them to be a better person all around and will allow them to be a better individual for the future. Social Studies should certainty be taught at the younger grade levels in at least some capacity. Overall, it is extremely important for students to have an basic understanding of this subject at a young age as will set them up for success in their future paths.

    2. Three things I have learned from taking this course: How to properly write a planning commentary, how to be more specific when writing my lesson plans, and how to make and relate social studies to a classroom of student who are really to learn!
